22 INFINITY POWER 2024 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT | PROTECTING THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
Protecting hooded vultures:
a first for Senegal
Hooded vultures are in crisis. Their populations
have plummeted by more than 80% in the past
decade, driven by poisoning, poaching, and
wildlife trafficking. As scavengers, they play a vital
ecological role, but their survival is at risk. At our
Taiba N’Diaye wind farm in Senegal, we spotted
an opportunity to prevent their decline.
In previous years, we set up a successful waste
management system in 45 villages near the wind
farm. By more regularly removing food waste
that once attracted vultures, we’ve lowered their
risk of collision with turbines, while also improving
sanitation for local communities.
Building on this success, in 2024 we launched
a pioneering conservation programme with
a national NGO to create Senegal’s first-ever
National Action Plan for vulture conservation. This
collaborative effort goes beyond focusing on
isolated interventions and tackles the root causes
of population decline while building long-term
conservation capacity.
